December 2024

Crews have begun forming rebar and pouring concrete for the foundational footers of the new addition. This critical step sets the stage for future construction and ensures a strong and stable foundation.

On the second floor, new mechanical HVAC equipment and electrical systems, including classroom unit ventilators with automated temperature controls, are being installed to improve comfort and energy efficiency in the classrooms.

Additionally, work is underway to frame new walls in the existing library, transforming the space into new classrooms and learning support offices. A new ADA-compliant restroom for students is also being constructed on the second floor, ensuring accessibility for all.

Interior upgrades include ceramic tiling in restrooms, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring, and acoustical ceiling tiles to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the space.

The district is committed to ensuring these renovations provide a modern, safe, and comfortable learning environment for students and staff. Weekly construction meetings continue to keep the project on schedule.

November 2024

The Kelly Primary Renovations and Additions Project is moving forward and we’re excited to share the latest updates. Work on the new addition has advanced significantly, where crews have excavated nearly 20 feet down to the foundational footers of the existing building. To support the foundation at this depth, a soil nailing and lagging wall is being constructed under floor 1A. The next step will be pouring concrete footers for the new stairwell and elevator shaft.

On the second floor, ceilings and walls are being removed as part of ongoing renovations. These upgrades will include new finishes like ceilings, windows, and flooring, as well as updated HVAC and electrical systems to modernize the space.

Additionally, a new 4-inch water line has been installed across the lower parking lot, replacing the old 3-inch pipe. This upgrade will support a new sprinkler system, which is planned for installation in the summer of 2025.

The district remains committed to ensuring these renovations improve safety, functionality, and comfort for students, staff, and visitors. Weekly construction meetings are helping keep the project on schedule.

October 2024

The Kelly Elementary School Renovations and Additions Project is making steady progress, with several updates to share. A modest canopy design for the 1A addition has been approved, along with glass doors to the playground and laminated first-floor windows to improve safety and appearance. To save costs, the team has implemented several changes, including substituting terrazzo tile, simplifying ductwork, and reducing the number of classroom outlets.

Plans for the parking lot currently include 69 spaces, with adjustments being made to minimize environmental impact. Landscaping plans are also in progress, with site lighting and bus stop benches included. Structural and mechanical updates have moved forward, including approval for an air-cooled chiller, a 30-year roof warranty, and the replacement of an old water heater. On the lower level, the existing boys' restroom will stay, with a new accessible restroom being added.

The district is pursuing several grants, such as the Renew America and Multi-modal Grants, with support from local and state leaders. Funding applications for kitchen equipment and community facilities are also underway. Weekly construction meetings are being held to keep the project on track, and safety remains a top priority, with privacy screens, temporary barriers, and updated signs ensuring restricted access to construction areas.

Final designs for the 1A and LL phases are on schedule for mid-November. The district will continue to share updates as this exciting transformation of Kelly Elementary School progresses.

September 2024

Before the school year began, abatement work in the boiler room and the removal of two decommissioned hot water tanks were completed.

Following this, the exterior walls in the boys' restroom and principal's office on floor 1A, classroom 7 on floor 1B, and classroom 25 on the 2nd floor were demolished and removed. These steps are crucial for integrating the new main entrance addition into the existing building.

Excavation work is now underway. Using an excavator and bobcat, digging down to the building foundation footer has begun. This is a critical step in constructing the new foundation for the addition. In tandem with this, the associated sidewalk was removed, and the district's flagpole was taken down.

To ensure safety during construction, privacy screens have been installed, and appropriate signage is displayed on the construction fencing. Additionally, temporary insulated wall barricades have been placed at the existing main entrance, the ramp to the 2nd floor, and the lower lot stairwell to restrict access to construction zones for students and staff.

August 2024

The abatement work is on track and was completed on Monday, August 12th. This included the Lower Level, 1A, 1B, and the 2nd floor. The scope of this work involved removing asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from floor tiles and mastic in various rooms throughout the school. Temporary flooring has been installed following the abatement process. Additionally, the process of demolishing and removing the hot water tanks in the mechanical room has been completed.

In terms of excavation, insulated drywall partitions have been installed on the 7th and 8th floors of 1B, in classroom 25 on the 2nd floor, and in the boys’ restroom at the main entrance. This preparation is crucial for the upcoming exterior wall demolition, which will pave the way for the new main entrance addition. Exterior wall demolition has been completed, allowing excavation to begin.
