Spanish

OBJECTIVE:

The initiative of introducing our children to the vast, global community, and the languages they speak, is a true investment in the futures of not only our own students, but the futures of the entire generation. Spanish classes at Kelly Primary will provide students with the tools to not only learn new vocabulary and grammar, but the knowledge of what foreign language is, who uses it, and the importance of learning it. The curriculum is being written to follow the ACTFL Core Standards, as well as the PA Department of Education’s own Standards, to provide the most comprehensive and cutting-edge lesson planning and materials to inspire true understanding and grasp of the target language. We hope that with this new program, our students will become true global learners: understanding the value of communicating outside of their own communities, growing their respect for other cultures, and cultivating their knowledge of other disciplines through the use of the target language.

DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

1.

Spanish/English Introduction: What is Language? How do we communicate? What is the difference between English and Spanish? Who speaks Spanish and where? Alphabet, Sounds/Pronunciation, Shapes, Colors, Numbers, Time/Date

2.

About Me/Us: Greetings, Names, “My name is…” “What is your name?”, Respect Words, Adjectives + Descriptions, Who are we? Who am I?, Verb expressions, Language/Culture: What is culture? What is made of our culture?

3.

Mexico/Other Cultures: Question Words, “Where is Mexico?” “Where are we?”, Food/Drink, Clothing, Weather

4.

5.

WHAT CHILDREN WILL LEARN BY THE END OF THE YEAR:

Our goal, by the end of this year, is for our students to be able to converse in full sentences spread over a variety of topics (depending on the age and school). According to both PA Standards and ACTFL Standards, our students will be considered Novice Low learners, and will be able to identify various vocabulary, across varying and broad topics, and create simple sentences expressing opinion, wants and ideas. In essence, this program is a true investment in the educational growth of our students and is the best opportunity we have to create a global mindset in our students, introduce the ideas of foreign languages and demonstrate the true value of broadening our scope of not only language, but culture and international perspective.
