Physical Education

OBJECTIVE:

Health and Physical Education combine to provide students with a guide to lifetime wellness. This holistic approach encourages children to be active for their entire lives, create healthy habits and become good decision makers. The lessons in this class incorporate a wide variety of academic disciplines while remaining developmentally appropriate. Physical education at this level develops a student's motor function and spatial awareness to create a skilled and competent mover. Manipulative activities, sport specific skill work and locomotor practice provide the learner with the necessary building blocks to engage in higher level physical activities. Team building activities demonstrate the importance of working together to accomplish a goal. 

 

 

 DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

Components of physical fitness:

Activities that develop muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, body composition and muscular endurance Sport specific skills

A variety of drills and lead up games that develop sport specific skills Cooperation

Team building activities that promote working together to accomplish a goal Health

Healthy habits such as hygiene, good decision making and proper nutrition Safety

Safety in a variety of contexts such as; gym/sports, school, home and community

 

WHAT CHILDREN WILL LEARN BY THE END OF THE YEAR:

HEALTH

Identify parts of the body as well as major organs and body systems

Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy foods.

Understand the importance of following directions for safe participation and proper use of equipment.

Explain and demonstrate basic hygiene practices.

Identify and apply safety precautions and protocols in a variety of situations

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

 

Perform and recognize locomotor skills such as; hopping, galloping, running, sliding, skipping

Perform a variety of manipulative skills

Volleys an object with an open palm, sending it upward.

Travel in different levels and pathways.

Differentiate between fast and slow speeds.

Understand the importance of following directions for safe participation and proper use of equipment.
