OBJECTIVE:

 

The objective of the Kelly Primary Library classes is to foster and promote the love of reading for pleasure and information. The librarian will collaborate with grade level teachers and administrators to inspire lifelong learning as well as to strive to meet the needs of all students of different ethnicities, cultures, and educational differences.

 

 

 

 DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

1.

To demonstrate proper book handling skills for print (e.g., how to open and hold properly, turn pages correctly, use bookmarks, and return books to their proper place).

To locate and identify parts of a book, to identify parts of a story (e.g., title, author, illustrator) and parts of text (e.g., beginning, middle, end and details) and to identify text features to locate key facts or information in text.

2.

With prompting and support, actively engage in group reading sources, engage in reading activities related to fiction and non-fiction with purpose and understanding, and to identify and locate grade level fiction and non-fiction texts.

3.

With support, identify why the author uses certain details to support points in text and identify details the author uses to support points in text.

4.

To describe illustrations in story read alouds, find connections between words and illustrations in a book read aloud or read alone, and identify characters, settings and events that occur in the story and describe based on illustrations and details.

5.

 To define the roles of author and illustrator, to locate the author’s and illustrator’s names on book cover and page, to explain differences between fiction and nonfiction texts, to compare and contrast differences between fiction and nonfiction, to recognize different types of texts and to participate in shared research.

 

WHAT CHILDREN WILL LEARN BY THE END OF THE YEAR:

All students will have been provided opportunities to develop basic skills in reading and the ability to listen and learn effectively. All students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of how the love of reading serves as a tool for lifelong learning and to develop a lifelong love of reading in a variety of formats.
