Kindergarten

OBJECTIVE:

Kindergarten at Kelly Primary will be enriching and enjoyable for your child in many ways.  The goal of our kindergarten program is to provide your child with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and study skills that he/she will use throughout his/her schooling. Students will engage in whole and small group learning, foster a love of books, reading, and writing, and engage in mathematical investigations.  Social studies and science will be explored through hands-on activities, literature, and learning centers.

DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

ELA: English Language Arts includes the skills of communication, reading, speaking and listening.  Your child will gain the following skills throughout the year in kindergarten: language development, the alphabet sequence,  recognize upper and lower case letters, identify various vocabulary words, listening and visual literacy, printing skills, left to right progression, sequencing, eye-hand coordination, rhyming words, enhance creative and critical thinking, increase oral vocabulary, answer in complete sentences, journaling, independent reading, recognize details of a story, retell a story,  building comprehension skills, and have an exposure to a variety of books, poems and short stories. In addition, students will participate in small, guided reading groups and intervention groups that will be suited for each child’s individual level. In these groups, students will be met at their level with different skills and activities that will allow them to master our kindergarten ELA objectives.

Writing:  Writing allows learners a way to communicate thoughts and ideas.  Your child will compose simple sentences focusing on using a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between words, and punctuation at the end.  Students will create narratives, informational stories, and opinion writing pieces.

Math: Mathematics engages students in hands-on learning while problem solving.  Your child will use a variety of manipulatives, such as counters of a variety of sizes/shapes, sorting items, pattern blocks, attribute sets, number cubes, number lines, to explore concepts of shapes, measurement, quantity comparisons, addition and subtraction.  The students will count to 100, recognize and write the numerals 0-20, and apply one-to-one correspondence up to twenty objects.

Science: Science enables students to understand themselves, others, and the world in which they live. Students are introduced to the nature of science, solving problems, motion, living things and earth and sky through small groups and individual hands-on activities.

Social Studies: Social Studies will introduce children to the people and customs of the community, country and the world around them.  Students will learn about cooperation with others, respect, the importance of community helpers, and different occupations through small group and individual hands-on activities.

WHAT CHILDREN WILL LEARN BY THE END OF THE YEAR

By the end of kindergarten, your child will recognize, name, and write all 26 letters of the alphabet (both uppercase and lowercase). They’ll know the correct sound that each letter makes, and they’ll be able to read about 100 high-frequency words—also called "sight words"—such as and, the, and in.  In class, kindergarten students will be taught to write simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, such as hat, red, and dog. They’ll also write short, simple sentences such as "The cat ran home." and experience writing class narratives, opinions, and informational stories.    By the end of the year, they should count to 100, recognize common shapes, and complete basic single-digit addition and subtraction. Kindergartners will learn to recognize, write, order, and count objects up to the number 20. They’ll also add and subtract small numbers (add with a sum of 10 or less and subtract from 10 or less). This focus on addition and subtraction will continue through second grade.
